Have you ever wondered what it takes to have a successful career as a woman? Applied Technology High School sophomores, Samantha Bischoff and Kamilia Nicolas, did, so they put together a panel of leading women to speak to the high schools students about just that–being a working woman.

The panelists–Carole Terrizi, Helon Faber, Fretta Desilva, and Maureen McManus–spoke to the high school students on March NEED DATE. INSERT INFO ABOUT TIMELINE

Carole Terrizi is the principal of Paramus Technical High School, and some of her tips were that being real and communicating with one another is crucial in moving forward in any division you work in.

Helon Faber worked in placing high-tech individuals in technology sales. She said, “Everything is technology and everything is sales.” When asked about how to nail an interview, she replied with the valuable advice to always ask, “What can I do for you?,” so that the interviewer recognizes your desire to be an asset to the company.

Fretta DeSilva, one of the freshman’s parents, Rohan DeSilva, worked at an international bank. But her ambition began much earlier in her life as she even ran women’s rights groups in college. One of her biggest tips is to be able to learn from your experiences. When you are able to reflect on what happens in your life, you learn from your mistakes and know how to accomplish tasks in a proper manner.

The panel also included Maureen McManus, who works at Stryker. Key points she made included that it’s important to keep learning and to always ask questions. She also made it clear that communication is key in any field that you enter.

Overall, the women’s leadership meeting was very informative for boys and girls.

SUEZ & Ridgewood Water Company Trip

Before visiting SUEZ and Ridgewood Water on the Teen Leads trip, I viewed water as primitive and basic in terms of life necessities. I didn’t give any real thought into the journey water goes through in order to flow out of the faucet or to be in a water bottle.

So, on March 20, 2018, I attended the Teen Leads trip with an open mind to learn about our water system in Bergen County.

On the trip, the Teen Leads  members toured these local water distributors, and observes the multiple sanitation steps that our water is run through. Having the ability to view and understand the processes in which our water is put through, is very informative.

After our visit to SUEZ and Ridgewood Water, I  left noticing how much we actually rely on water to be available at all times. Along with being more aware of my constant usage of water, I learned how beneficial drinking tap water is in comparison to bottled water. I am now aware of the regulations and accessibility our water is put through, which shows how complex the distribution of water actually is.

Teen Leads Luncheon

On December 12, the Teen Leads Club met with the Bergen LEADS for an informal pizza luncheon to learn how both groups can further their initiatives to volunteer and better Bergen County.

Bergen LEADS is an organization that has a panel of leaders who discuss important issues regarding New Jersey, specifically Bergen County. They focus on understanding the way the county works and often go on field trips to get a one-on-one experience of the organizations that help making the county function.

This is very similar to Applied Tech’s Teen Leads group, but on a bigger scale. By meeting with them, the students were able to discuss  the places Teen Leads  visited and what their future plans to volunteer include.

After the meeting ended, group members gathered around the Bergen Leads members and had interesting conversations about the clubs or even societal issues. Overall, it was a very informative and productive luncheon and Teen Leads is looking forward to continuing its efforts to make the community a better place.
